Another game, another loss, another great effort from the Blueshirts. That’s the way the Rangers have been playing for most of the 2018-2019 campaign so far, and in their return home to face the Red Wings, David Quinn’s crew fell just short by a score of 3-2.

The main killer on Tuesday for New York was Red Wings’ forward Andreas Athanasiou who scored a pair of goals for the Red Wings. The game was actually 3-1 thanks to Athanasiou’s second, an empty netter, but Brendan Smith scored with less than ten seconds remaining to cut the lead to one. Ryan Stromehad the other tally for the Rangers. Kevin Shattenkirk, Pavel Buchnevich, Brett Howden, and Neal Pionkall notched assists. Per usual, Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard brought his A-game to Detroit MSG for the win. He stopped 41 shots.

The Rangers outplayed the Wings in the first, spraying 17 shots on Jimmy Howard, but Detroit would be the team to strike. In the latter stages of the opening frame, veteran Frans Nielsen powered his way past recent Rangers’ call up John Gilmour and managed to fend him off before tucking one past HenrI’m Lundqvist.

At 4:07 of the second, a misplay from Brady Skjei sprung Jacob de la Rose with Athanasiou for a 2-on-1 and Kevin Shattenkirk overcommitted a bit to the shot and de la Rose made the perfect pass for Athanasiou who buried it to double the lead.

The Rangers put forth a valiant effort in the third, but ultimately fell short. Ryan Strome scored in the 14th minute to cut the score in half as he punched in a rebound following a long wrist shot from the tape of Kevin Shattenkirk. Just after the Rangers pulled the goalie, Pavel Buchenvich bad a glorious opportunity on the doorstep to tie it but failed horribly. If that wasn’t enough for the Russian winger, he was seen sobbing on the bench after when Athanasiou buried the empty netter. With 10 seconds left, Brendan Smith tallied a goal but it would be too little too late.

The Blueshirts have three days off before they play again on Saturday. That begins a rough stretch of four games against playoff teams. We might not see them get a point for the rest of the month.

Andrew Chodes Back in 2012, I started to become a big fan of the rangers. Ever since Adam Henrique scored the goal we know and love to forget, I became a die-hard fanatic. I’ve witnessed some unbelievable moments along with some heartbreaking ones throughout the years, but my love for the Blueshirts will never die. Recently, I have partaken in some classes at Hofstra University to hopefully propel me to become a sports journalist or broadcaster when I become older. With being so dedicated to the Rangers, joining BSN is a big step in my dream of working in this field. LGR
